Moxibustion for Malpositioned Foetus (Breach Presentation)

Moxibustion is the burning of a herb called AiYe (Artemisia vulgaris), commonly referred to as Moxa. When burnt it produces an intense heat source which can be used to warm specific points on the body. For 2000 years moxibustion has been used in China to help turn breach babies.

When used to treat breach the Moxa is rolled into a cigar shape, to form a stick that can easily be held over the points needed. However a smokeless version is more commonly used now. It is thought the use of Moxa stimulates a change in the levels of placental Oestogen and rostaglandin, resulting in increased movement.

Is there any research on the use of moxa to correct breach?

Cardini et al * produced research using 130 subjects. All were primigravidas with breech presentation during the 33rd week of gestation. Moxibustion was used for 1 to 2 weeks. This resulted in increased foetal activity during the treatment period and cephalic presentation after the treatment period and at delivery.

When is the best time to receive treatment?

Treatment is most effective as close to 34 weeks as possible, before the baby grows too large. Your practitioner will also give you a booklet containing techniques which can be used throughout labour and birth.

What is the treatment like?

The treatment is simple and relaxing, you will be seated in a comfortable position and will feel a warming sensation at the selected points. During your treatment your practitioner will also show you how to replicate the treatment at home. After your treatment you will be expected to continue treatment at home everyday for 10 days. You will usually become aware of increased foetal activity, which then culminates with the turning.
